January 2000Apollo 11 Moon Rocks Revisited On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin Jr. landed the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle on the Moon’s Sea of Tranquillity. Hours later Armstrong descended a ladder and became the first human to walk on the lunar surface. Astronaut Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command ship, Columbia, during the balance of the mission.
